I wrote this in Cody, Wyoming in the autumn of 2009 in the courtyard of the Buffalo Bill Museum. Visiting Wyoming always quickens my sense of belonging, not only through family stories, but also the big open vistas of sky and earth bring perspective and continuity in my life. I have a photo of my grandmother Maude McCoy riding horseback with Buffalo Bill not far from where this poem was written.  The art project that inspired this poem was ‘seeking grandmother’.  I found her here through the land, the light and smells of the season and the sense of adventure.  Ched Miller liked the poem and as a gift recorded it.
